Privacy policy

This policy explains what Cheaper Driving (“we”, “us”) collects when you use cheaperdriving.com and what we do with it. We keep it short because we collect very little.

The calculator and the comparison details we save

The calculator runs in your web browser. When you complete a comparison, we save the details anonymously so we can produce statistics about how people compare vehicles and what that means for fuel costs. We save: the vehicles you chose (or a note that you typed in your own figures), the fuel economy figures, your annual miles, the fuel price and electricity rate you used, whether that rate was the default, a state average or your own entry, the state if you picked one, the resulting cost per mile and yearly saving, and the date and time.

We do not save your name, email address, IP address, location or any cookie or other identifier on your device. Each visit gets a random code that lives only in your browser’s memory for that page visit, so that changing your comparison updates one record instead of adding many. It is discarded when you leave the page and cannot be used to recognise you later. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we do not record your comparisons at all.

We use these records only in combined form, for example “the most compared pickups” or “average annual miles by state”. We never publish an individual comparison.

If you use the Share, Copy link, WhatsApp or Email buttons, your choices are written into a link, which is only as private as wherever you send it. Building that link happens in your browser and does not send anything to us.

Where the comparison details are stored, and for how long

Comparisons are stored on our web hosting (Hostinger) and copied to Airtable, a database service we use to analyse them. We delete raw comparisons after about 24 months and keep only combined statistics.

The “Not listed” lookup

If you use the lookup, the vehicle description you type is sent to our server and then to an AI service provided by Anthropic, which searches the web for a fuel economy figure. Please do not type personal details such as your name, address or license plate. We cache the answer on our server for up to 60 days so repeat lookups are faster. We also keep a record of the description and how many times it has been requested, so we can see which vehicles are missing from the list and add them, and we copy that record to Airtable. We keep a count of lookups per visitor (using a one-way hash of your IP address and a site secret) to prevent abuse; the hash is not linked to what you typed. Anthropic handles the text under its own privacy policy.

Server logs and hosting

The site is hosted by Hostinger. Like every web host, it records standard technical information such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, for security and to keep the site running. We do not use this to identify you.

Cookies and tracking

We do not set advertising or tracking cookies. If this changes, for example if we add privacy-friendly analytics, we will update this page. The site loads fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google to download them.

Links to other sites

We link to sources such as fueleconomy.gov. Those sites have their own policies and we are not responsible for them.

Children

The site is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices and contact

Because we collect so little, there is rarely anything to delete, but if you have a question or want us to remove something, email contact@cheaperdriving.com.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top.
